Highland has partnered with St. Mark's UMC of El Paso in mission to Hungary. El Paso has an established relationship with the UMCs of Hungary and has been active in their efforts there for eight years. Each year they have sent a team to minister in this area.
Hungary is one of the nations of Central Europe where freedom of religion has been repressed. Now, many young people are searching for answers to their spiritual questions. English camps are a way to reach out to this young generation, offering them opportunities to learn English through stories from the Bible. The UMC in Budapest offers such a camp, and we go as part of the team to serve as teachers and to build relationship with the students as well as the other adults helping with the camp for the first week of this mission trip.
The second week is spent doing Vacation Bible School, home visits, women's meetings, and worship services in the Roma village of Kisvaszsar. This is done in partnership with Dombovar UMC. Together the renovation of a barn into a church building for those of the village has been a very visible showing of the love and service of Christ. May connections and friendships have formed as a result of the mission work in Hungary, spreading unity across the barriers of language, culture and a great big ocean!
Our week finished up with a meal of goulash in the Roma village of Kisvashar along with the churches of Budapest and Dombovar.
